Envy Me: Fallout 3 GOTY Collector's Edition Game Guide
Sigh. An addict and her toys. I was in Best Buy last night, debating whether or not to pick up Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (only 5 hours of single player mode? Ish don't tink so!) when I spotted the limited edition Fallout 3 Game of The Year edition guide. Hard cover, glossy illustrated, and every bit like a brand new text book on the first day of school. Oh god I'm so in love. It even smells like a textbook and has a index in the back and everything. The former egghead in me is as giddy as a schoolgirl.
Isn't it beautiful? I love that every incarnation of Vault Boy is included on the cover.
This Collector's Edition Fallout 3 Game Of The Year edition game guide also came with the handy poster you see above (top picture). I am not kidding when I say it marks every first and secondary location in the whole of the Wastes, including possible random encounter locations and Enclave camps. I'd love to put it up on my wall, command-post style but let's face it, it really doesn't go well with my "moo cow couch" (as my mother puts it) or my miles high stacks of diet soda cans. So, on the carpet it stays.
As part of the deal of accommodating this rather frivolous item into the combined income budget of my household, I'm compelled to tell you that I "ruined my Christmas" by getting this book early. "But!" I argued "it won't be as much use to me by Christmas! I'll have played through twice by then. And besides, since when did we ever follow tradition!" Alas, this is part of the deal. I ruined my Christmas, folks. And it was totally worth it.

I must admit, there is definitely some envy going on.
I couldn't justify the purchase of the GOTY edition of the game having purchased the special edition but hell, I'd buy the GOTY guide exclusively for my very own Vault-Boy collage.
Modern Warfare is awesome and all but Fallout trumps CoD all day.

You know, as much as its known that I am a FO3 fangirl, I'll have to agree with you on that anyway, knowing that I'm not the most credible source, lol.
My entire interest in FPS was reignited by FO3, and I think I finally figured out why. While COD does appeal to me, games like Halo and Mass Effect do to a far lesser extent. And I think it boils down to the depth of the game. Give me a rich visual experience and a game with layers. A great storyline, a terrifying but fascinating premise. Give me color, give me the most beautiful textures I've ever seen, give me VIVID, give me unforgettable, dangerous but intriguing. I don't want another game with a space marine in a cold alien ship, I want landscapes, unique items, an immersive experience, and something I have to THINK about instead of just shooting or maiming everything in sight.
If the setting, set up, and atmosphere of Fallout 3 were not so good, I'd have little desire to play. As it is, its a wonderful perfect masterpiece of sci fi horror survival FPS-RPG and I couldn't be happier with the mashup!
Fallout 3 is truly a successful mash-up of the genres and they did a great job bringing back the look and feel of the originals in full 3D.
I still haven't had a chance to play Borderlands, but my hopes are very high. I don't expect a Fallout level of atmosphere or playstyle but so far it seems to rank higher than the Halos and Call of Dutys as far as fun and uniqueness.
Borderlands appeals to me as well, but I do admit I think it looks a lot like a Fallout 3 from a Raider's perspective...
I think you might be missing out a bit if you haven't ever played Mass Effect, if you are looking for a game with a great story, immersive environment. The space marine setup for the character is pretty generic, I'll admit, but once you get going, you get to make some pretty heavy choices, and not to mention the variety of characters. Even the PILOT of your ship has a pretty detailed background, let alone some of the others. The graphics didn't impess me much, but the universe did.
