Nintendo’s hit also won Outstanding Achievements in Game Direction and Game Design, as well as Adventure Game of the Year

The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) held the 21st ceremony of the DICE Awards last night, with 24 awards up for grabs, voted for by the organisation’s 33,000 members.

Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the big winner of the evening, with four prizes including Game of the Year. The Switch hit also won Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Game Design and Adventure Game of the Year.

StudioMDHR won three awards for Cuphead: Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction and Outstanding Achievement in Animation.

Horizon Zero Dawn, Lone Echo/Echo Arena, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Snipperclips each won two awards. Without surprise, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds won the Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay award.

Meanwhile, Fire Emblem Heroes was named Mobile game of the Year and the Sprite Award, which is given to a game “representing a higher degree of risk tolerance and advances our media with innovative gameplay and experiences,” was won by Snipperclips.

Genyo Takeda, special corporate advisor at Nintendo, was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award, “for having been at the forefront of shaping the video games hardware industry in his career-long tenure at Nintendo with the development of the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube and the Wii system.”

Meggan Scavio, president of the AIAS, commented: “Every year, the DICE Awards brings the global interactive entertainment industry under one roof to recognize and honor the very best in video games – the games that captivated and inspired us, and kept us entertained for hours on end. On behalf of the Academy, I am thrilled to congratulate this year’s winners of the 21st DICE Awards.”
