Ambitious multiplayer shooter reportedly set back to early next year

Kotaku’s Jason Schreier has written a lengthy piece about EA’s upcoming Anthem game, which when first seen at last year’s E3 had a ‘Fall 2018’ release date. According to Schreier, though, Anthem won’t be seen before early 2019.

His sources are ‘three people familiar with the project’ and that the original date was ‘never realistic.’ Though it’s hardly astonishing that what appears to be a graphically cutting-edge, Destiny-styled, multiplayer online title is going to be a little delayed. He goes onto say that developers feel it unlikely to drift past March – as that is the end of EA’s fiscal year.

The game is being developed by Bioware, with both the Edmonton and Austin studios reportedly working flat out on the game. However, this claim drew an immediate reaction from Bioware’s Mark Durrah, stating he was executive producer of both Dragon Age and Anthem and that both franchises were being worked upon. Though he gave no details on how far along he new Dragon Age was.

Halfway through my trip to Barcelona!
I’m here showing Anthem internally to EA. I am EP of BOTH DA and Anthem working with @Bio_Warner as Game Director
Anthem’s up next but there are people hard at work on both franchises and I look forward to sharing more in the future

There’s now a huge amount of attention on Anthem and specifically on its microtransactions. After EA came under heavy fire from fans with its implementation of loot boxes in Battlefront II and with Destiny 2 also being under scrutiny for the same issue – Anthem will need to get this element of the game just right.
