Biggest acquisition in Danish film outfit’s 111 year history

Danish film and entertainment studio Nordisk Film has swept in and taken full ownership of Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios, a year after taking a minority stake in the company.

Nordisk acquired a minority stake in Avalanche in April 2017, and this full acquisition is the largest in the company’s 111 year history. Nordisk pointed out in a press release that: “Avalanche Studios’ strategy will remain unaltered. It will continue as a creatively independent game studio, developing its own IPs, as well as catering to third-party publishers and license holders.”

Basically, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Just Cause 4 in the near horizon, and also suggests we could see more collaborations similar to Rage 2, which the company is co-developing with id Software. This all makes a lot of sense: Avalanche has grown hugely recently, and the Rage 2 announcement has been joined by the opening of a brand new studio – Avalanche Malmö. Almost as if there’s a golden age.

“We have had a fantastic year with Nordisk Film as part of Avalanche Studios,” added Avalanche CEO Pim Holfve. “We’ve grown at a pace which was previously not possible.”

Avalanche’s chief creative officer and founder Christofer Sundberg expressed that the studio is keen to continue “our long and successful relationships with the best publishers in our industry, as well as creating new games under our own Avalanche Studios publishing label.”
