Time for a fun update from one of my most anticipated games for the upcoming year, Battleblock Theater! In the footage above you’ll see a bit more of the cooperation based gameplay as well as some of the unique traps and power-ups. Other recently released footage also revealed a new addition of a sticky wall tar that allows for wall jumps, an element that firmly feels at home in the Battleblock universe.

I got to play this charming little title at length with Behemoth level designer Aaron Jungjohann; be sure to check out the resulting preview

PAX Prime 2011 Preview: Battleblock Theater

With the horrors of PAX Prime 2011 fading into distant memory (YOU try lugging around camera equipment for 12+ hours a day, fueled only by limited sleep, 5 Hour Energy, stored beer fat, and beef jerky) it’s time to finally bust out with the previews! Up first is the endearing Battleblock Theater, a co-op/vs. beat ‘em up coming from the makers of Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers, San Diego based indie studio The Behemoth.

I first played Battleblock Theater back at PAX 2010, when The Behemoth was only showcasing the game’s multiplayer mode. I was unaware there’d also be a story mode, which at a whopping 100+ levels and 100+ playable characters is arguably the bulk of the entire game. Fueled by Dan Paladin’s endless doodling, the amount of content is staggering; level designer Aaron Jungjohann says the development of Behemoth titles is constantly adapting to incorporate the whimsical new creatures showing up on scraps of paper and pages across the studio. In fact, Aaron tells me he entered Dan’s office only last week to find an amusing series of desserts drawn to look like ghosts; ice cream, pie, even cheesecake, all done up as transparent, sugary specters ready to unleash calorific doom. As Aaron puts it, “Who knows what’ll be in the game next! Maybe we’ll see a cheesecake ghost boss!” (I’d like to go on record right now saying I’d play the hell out of that).

While playing the new build of Battleblock Theater with Aaron, now on a dual player arcade box instead of last year’s Xbox and TV stations, I was immediately struck by the fluidity of the gameplay. Battleblock Theater‘s biggest triumph is its flow: fans of side scrolling dash classics like Mario and Sonic will feel right at home with the speed and ease with which they fly through each level. Like Castle Crashers, the story mode isn’t limited to one player, however, Battleblock Theater‘s levels will actually adjust and incorporate co-op puzzles based on the number of players, boosting the game’s replayability value.

Those who are already familiar with the Behemoth brand of mischievious charm will be pleased to know that the fun only continues in Battleblock Theater. While I’ve yet to see any poop (damn, Paladin loves him some poop), I will say that even the premise of Battleblock Theater is an enchanting bit of dark humor:

“Having shipwrecked on a mysterious island you find yourself both betrayed by your best friend Hatty and captured by the locals. All of this is happening while being forced into deadly performances. This however, is just the start of your problems.”

giving rise to an end screen where your characters are thrown on a rack and stretched according to how well they did in the level. There’s not much I can tell you about the direction of the story in the…um, story mode… and describing specifically all the mechanisms (like exploding blocks that clear paths, or wings that boost you to higher platforms) would certainly spoil the fun. But I can say they’ve managed to use the platform genre in a way that’s both completely fresh and signature Behemoth, encouraging vertical level exploration, alternate puzzle solutions, and tricky time based maneuvering. Combined with the inventive minigames of Battleblock Theater‘s competitive multiplayer mode, this title stands out as a shining example of its kind, breathing new life into an exhausted game standard.

So now the big question, the question I knew better than to ask during my visit: When’s the release date? Other outlets have listed Battleblock Theater as a 2011 title, but when I spoke with Aaron, he sounded less confident. When I asked about the percentage completed of the game, he told me that he didn’t think they would be able to make the 2011 date, but that at this point in the game’s development, all they needed was “content”. Judging by the build I played, and Aaron’s remarks, I’d be very surprised if the game did not come out by April 2012. Don’t hold me to that. It’s what they call an educated guess. Or in my case, a limited education guess.

Battleblock Theater has so far been announced for XBLA, with no official word on PSN release. And if you’re wondering about DLC, the answer is a resounding yes, though no word on if any will cross over from Alien Hominid or Castle Crashers.

Here are a few snaps of the Behemoth booth at PAX Prime 2011. This year they had more merchandise than ever, additional arcade boxes and a Chonku Chonku machine churning out little Knight toys. I checked out the new Knight figurines too, which run $20, or $60 for the four pack. Definitely a must-buy when my budget recovers from PAX.

While I was there I also made sure to bother Tom Fulp so I could do what I always do and make a fool out of myself real good in front of one of my idols. Gotta do it at least once every convention, right? While at the Destructoid/Gameworks party on Thursday night, Gil Ruta told me Reggie Fils-Aime STILL jokes about my goofy ass.

The Behemoth Twitter feed is giving away a few shirts left over from PAX East, so I took this snap to convince them I “need” the girl’s medium. To enter check out their feed: http://www.twitter.com/thebehem0th

I think this is the same one I saw at PAX 2010, but nonetheless it’s fun to watch again. This game is going to be bitchin’. I mean just look at this hat:

Just look at it.

Sold.

Test Your Mettle On Battleblock Theater Story Mode In 2011

Behemoth has released some exciting news for would-be (Battle)blockheads. While 2010 saw the versus mode of Battleblock Theater demoed at cons and events across the world, 2011 will be the year of the story mode, with the 2 player version making its debut next month.

I actually checked out Battleblock Theater while covering PAX Prime this past August, and I had a lot of fun. While Battleblock Theater is objective-based in its versus mode, and doesn’t have the stellar cast or item list of Super Smash Bros., I would say I had that level of four player fighter fun. I would highly recommend testing this one out while attending the year’s upcoming fan event. The dates are as follows:

PAX East (Boston, MA) March 11-13th

Tokyo Anime Fair (Tokyo, Japan) Business Days- March 24-25th; Public Days March 26-27th

Comic Con International (San Diego, CA) July 21-24th

PAX Prime (Seattle, WA) August 26-28th

Below are a block of new screen shots:

No Battleblock Theater This Year

Oh poop. No Battleblock Theater for you…this year. Behemoth has taken to their blog to explain:

“Long story short, BattleBlock Theater is becoming so much more than we ever expected.  It feels like no other game out there – there’s a little more r&d than we thought and lots of new ground to break.  This means we will not be releasing in 2010, but the good news is now that we’ve got Castle Crashers out on PSN worldwide, you can expect LOTS more updates on where we are headed with BBT.”

And there you have it. Your daily dose of crushing disappointment. Glad I could be of help.

Behemoth Presents Battleblock Theater TGS 2010

This video was too cute not to share. Plus by checking it out you’ll see some very very brief footage of what I got to experience at PAX 2010, so there’s always that. Or you could just take the  opportunity to see Japanese people at a convention NOT dolled up in cosplay which, let’s face it, is as rare as my brief moments of sobriety.

All Things Behemoth And BattleBlock Theater PAX 2010

BattleBlock Theater is the new upcoming game from Behemoth, a 4 person co-op and versus platformer, their third game following Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Pete Betcher and I had a chance to stop by and play it while stopping by at PAX 2010, an experience I’m very glad I took the time for.

While Pete stated that he previously was not too impressed with the build of the game he played last year, he did say this one seems much improved. I won’t speak for him too much, but from the laughter and screams from our side of the demo tower, it’s clear we both enjoyed ourselves. The objectives in each two on two battle were inventive and wildly fun to say the least. Of three types of stages we played, the last was the most difficult. Our characters were duking it out for our very souls, which floated above their little heads whenever they got hit. The goal was to collect the other teams’ and keep them for yourself for as long as possible. Dastardly, and deliciously fun. Another stage featured the Behemoth take on the “collect gold coins” mini game, adding a safe that coins must be deposited in (after they’ve been spewed out by a floating whale. Mmm, ambergris). Points are racked up at the end, and Pete and I were pumped to win 2/3 of the stages.

The controls were basic and we picked them up quickly, though we did have the benefit of a helpful booth attendant who gave us tips in between rounds. Player duos on the same team can stack up for certain objectives, while performing a punch and then jumping on your opponent will kill them. The rest is your typical button mashing. The art style is classic Behemoth; clean yet whimsical, while bright and pleasing on the eyes. The character selection seemed pretty broad as well, with many different shaped heads, bodies, and weapons to choose from. Me, I went with the grenades. Pete went with something that sucked, don’t remember what that was…probably ’cause I was too busy winning.

Updated version of the Behemoth timeline, now including Hatty from BattleBlock Theater.

There’s a bit of a backstory to this all-out battlefest. Shipwrecked on a “mysterious island”, you find yourself captured by locals following a betrayal by your trusted friend Hatty, and forced into the deadliest performance of your life as you fight to rescue your friends. I’m guessing this is where the battle royale come in. Below you’ll find some pictures from the Behemoth booth, including an updated version of the Behemoth time line from conventions past. There’s also a shot of the Castle Crashers arcade box, which made its debut at PAX 2010. Above is the can’t-miss official trailer.

BattleBlock Theater is expected on Xbox Live Arcade sometime in 2010. Check out some pictures from the Behemoth booth from PAX 2010 below.
