Castle Crashers Update Fixes Bugs, Adds Purple Knight

The Behemoth may currently be hard at work perfecting their sure to be a smash hit Battleblock Theater, but they haven’t forgotten their roots! This week, they released an update to sophomore title Castle Crashers, adding both bug fixes and a NEW KNIGHT: PURPLE! Players can also now enjoy Team vs. Team matchups in the Player Match Arena, two new avatars (Cardinal Animal Orb and Knight Helmet), and a new main menu news ticker for Castle Crashers related news.

In addition to the fixes and the roster addition, the Pink Knight is now free with this update, and The Behemoth is donating $1 for the first 50,000 downloads to Keep A Breast Foundation.

I had a chance to tour the Behemoth booth at PAX Prime 2011, and even spoke with Tom Fulp, whom I made sure to tell that “we Gamer Grrlz” appreciated their efforts for breast cancer treatment and awareness, to which I got a self conscious but pleased grin. Be sure to hop into your Castle Crashers game soon to get the free loot and support Keep A Breast Foundation!

Here are a few snaps of the Behemoth booth at PAX Prime 2011. This year they had more merchandise than ever, additional arcade boxes and a Chonku Chonku machine churning out little Knight toys. I checked out the new Knight figurines too, which run $20, or $60 for the four pack. Definitely a must-buy when my budget recovers from PAX.

While I was there I also made sure to bother Tom Fulp so I could do what I always do and make a fool out of myself real good in front of one of my idols. Gotta do it at least once every convention, right? While at the Destructoid/Gameworks party on Thursday night, Gil Ruta told me Reggie Fils-Aime STILL jokes about my goofy ass.

Necromancer Got Stuffed Heh Heh Heh

Bento box betty AnnaTheRed has been taking some time off the lunch circuit lately to work in stuff and fluff, stitching up this adorable Necromancer from Castle Crashers for her lil friend Trace. I just wanna squeeze him until his head pops off! The Necromancer I mean. Trace, meanwhile, is possibly the cutest Castle Crashers fan ever. Besides me. Harsh, yes, but you’ve never seen me in footie pajamas:

The New Castle Crashers Knight Will Tickle You Pink

People want the pink. Which is something we’re all aware of, but in this case I was a little surprised. By popular demand, a new Knight is joining PSN’s Castle Crasher roster, in a tantalizing shade of candy pink. Along with the new hue, this addition brings a total of four new weapons, including a lollipop!

And while the new Knight’s February 8 release is conveniently timed right before Valentine’s Day, 100% of the $1.99 price will go towards breast cancer research. Behemoth also assures that there will be a version coming out for XBLA’s Castle Crashers in the coming weeks.

All Things Behemoth And BattleBlock Theater PAX 2010

BattleBlock Theater is the new upcoming game from Behemoth, a 4 person co-op and versus platformer, their third game following Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers. Pete Betcher and I had a chance to stop by and play it while stopping by at PAX 2010, an experience I’m very glad I took the time for.

While Pete stated that he previously was not too impressed with the build of the game he played last year, he did say this one seems much improved. I won’t speak for him too much, but from the laughter and screams from our side of the demo tower, it’s clear we both enjoyed ourselves. The objectives in each two on two battle were inventive and wildly fun to say the least. Of three types of stages we played, the last was the most difficult. Our characters were duking it out for our very souls, which floated above their little heads whenever they got hit. The goal was to collect the other teams’ and keep them for yourself for as long as possible. Dastardly, and deliciously fun. Another stage featured the Behemoth take on the “collect gold coins” mini game, adding a safe that coins must be deposited in (after they’ve been spewed out by a floating whale. Mmm, ambergris). Points are racked up at the end, and Pete and I were pumped to win 2/3 of the stages.

Side view of the Castle Crashers arcade box, which debuted at PAX 2010.

The controls were basic and we picked them up quickly, though we did have the benefit of a helpful booth attendant who gave us tips in between rounds. Player duos on the same team can stack up for certain objectives, while performing a punch and then jumping on your opponent will kill them. The rest is your typical button mashing. The art style is classic Behemoth; clean yet whimsical, while bright and pleasing on the eyes. The character selection seemed pretty broad as well, with many different shaped heads, bodies, and weapons to choose from. Me, I went with the grenades. Pete went with something that sucked, don’t remember what that was…probably ’cause I was too busy winning.

Updated version of the Behemoth timeline, now including Hatty from BattleBlock Theater.

There’s a bit of a backstory to this all-out battlefest. Shipwrecked on a “mysterious island”, you find yourself captured by locals following a betrayal by your trusted friend Hatty, and forced into the deadliest performance of your life as you fight to rescue your friends. I’m guessing this is where the battle royale come in. Below you’ll find some pictures from the Behemoth booth, including an updated version of the Behemoth time line from conventions past. There’s also a shot of the Castle Crashers arcade box, which made its debut at PAX 2010. Above is the can’t-miss official trailer.

BattleBlock Theater is expected on Xbox Live Arcade sometime in 2010. Check out some pictures from the Behemoth booth from PAX 2010 below.

Castle Crashers Gets PSN Release Date

Beach volleyball season may soon be ending, but your virtual version is only beginning. The PSN version of Castle Crashers, which brings with it the exclusive beach volleyball mini game based, now has an official release date of August 31. That puts it head to head with Wii hard hitter Metroid: Other M. Will you take a quirky medieval adventure, or a cold trip in space? Decisions decisions (me, I decide to buy both).

And don’t forget to sign up for Destructoid’s giveaway with Behemoth. The more entries they get the more gifts they’ll give away so be sure to enter!
