Squee! Alice: Madness Returns Gameplay Videos!

You ever wait for something so long you can’t believe it when it finally arrives? It seems like all these relics from my post high school PC past are coming back, just as I’d given up all hope; Diablo III, a sequel to Alice. It wasn’t until I saw these gameplay videos that it really hit me that Alice: Madness Returns is real and actually happening. What’s next…the Alice movie? Ha yeah right. When pigs fly. Out of my butthole. While wearing top hats. So, you know. Maybe in a few years.

A few thoughts on the gameplay videos:

So far I’m not disappointed with the level design. It’s nice to see what I can only call a “fully realized” Alice game: everything feels much bigger when compared to the original, which adds a lot in terms of the Wonderland setting. The textures and colors are much richer; all in all the visual experience has vastly improved while retaining much of the original aesthetic.

I love Alice’s new dress! I also like the flourish of bright leaves and the twirl with each jump. Her movement in general seems less sluggish. The view looks less buggy as well; the camera follows Alice more seamlessly than before. The weapon cycling also is improved, and I like what I see of the new weapons so far. They are delightfully Wonderland themed and look quite fun to murder with. In-battle, a burst of butterflies spreads from her back when she rushes forward; that’s a cute addition.

Checking out the cards, it looks the character design has been changed into something much darker. Not sure what to think about that yet. I also don’t know about the music…it sounds enough like Chris Vrenna’s original work, but unless it’s actually him on the project, I have my doubts it’ll be quite as good. I’m curious to hear what that might sound like on a video that doesn’t have the constant convention back chatter, heh.

I miss seeing Chesire Cat physically manifest when giving tips. I also miss the visible health and sanity bars. Sad face.

What do you like about the new Alice?
