Public Service Reminder: Mass Effect 3 Demo Out Now

You know, i thought the 11-11-11 release date for Skyrim was kinda clever, but this is just brilliant. Releasing a Mass Effect 3 demo on the day of love. I’ll bet some of you have big plans tonight…now.

Head over to PSN or XBLA to check it out.

Go Threadless, Now On XBLA

Need some new Avatar duds? Threadless has got you digitally covered! The Xbox Live Arcade now has Threadless T-shirts and sweatshirts, 16 for your male Avatar, and 8 for female.

Unlike the real Threadless, the male and female markings are set in stone; you won’t be able to use a shirt that’s designated for the opposite sex. I guess it’s difficult for pixel T-shirts to make room for pixel boobs. Or something. But whatever your gender, the T-shirts go for 80 Microsoft Points, sweatshirts for 160, and all are available now on Xbox Live Arcade.

PAX Prime 2011 Preview: Battleblock Theater

With the horrors of PAX Prime 2011 fading into distant memory (YOU try lugging around camera equipment for 12+ hours a day, fueled only by limited sleep, 5 Hour Energy, stored beer fat, and beef jerky) it’s time to finally bust out with the previews! Up first is the endearing Battleblock Theater, a co-op/vs. beat ‘em up coming from the makers of Alien Hominid and Castle Crashers, San Diego based indie studio The Behemoth.

I first played Battleblock Theater back at PAX 2010, when The Behemoth was only showcasing the game’s multiplayer mode. I was unaware there’d also be a story mode, which at a whopping 100+ levels and 100+ playable characters is arguably the bulk of the entire game. Fueled by Dan Paladin’s endless doodling, the amount of content is staggering; level designer Aaron Jungjohann says the development of Behemoth titles is constantly adapting to incorporate the whimsical new creatures showing up on scraps of paper and pages across the studio. In fact, Aaron tells me he entered Dan’s office only last week to find an amusing series of desserts drawn to look like ghosts; ice cream, pie, even cheesecake, all done up as transparent, sugary specters ready to unleash calorific doom. As Aaron puts it, “Who knows what’ll be in the game next! Maybe we’ll see a cheesecake ghost boss!” (I’d like to go on record right now saying I’d play the hell out of that).

While playing the new build of Battleblock Theater with Aaron, now on a dual player arcade box instead of last year’s Xbox and TV stations, I was immediately struck by the fluidity of the gameplay. Battleblock Theater‘s biggest triumph is its flow: fans of side scrolling dash classics like Mario and Sonic will feel right at home with the speed and ease with which they fly through each level. Like Castle Crashers, the story mode isn’t limited to one player, however, Battleblock Theater‘s levels will actually adjust and incorporate co-op puzzles based on the number of players, boosting the game’s replayability value.

Those who are already familiar with the Behemoth brand of mischievious charm will be pleased to know that the fun only continues in Battleblock Theater. While I’ve yet to see any poop (damn, Paladin loves him some poop), I will say that even the premise of Battleblock Theater is an enchanting bit of dark humor:

“Having shipwrecked on a mysterious island you find yourself both betrayed by your best friend Hatty and captured by the locals. All of this is happening while being forced into deadly performances. This however, is just the start of your problems.”

giving rise to an end screen where your characters are thrown on a rack and stretched according to how well they did in the level. There’s not much I can tell you about the direction of the story in the…um, story mode… and describing specifically all the mechanisms (like exploding blocks that clear paths, or wings that boost you to higher platforms) would certainly spoil the fun. But I can say they’ve managed to use the platform genre in a way that’s both completely fresh and signature Behemoth, encouraging vertical level exploration, alternate puzzle solutions, and tricky time based maneuvering. Combined with the inventive minigames of Battleblock Theater‘s competitive multiplayer mode, this title stands out as a shining example of its kind, breathing new life into an exhausted game standard.

So now the big question, the question I knew better than to ask during my visit: When’s the release date? Other outlets have listed Battleblock Theater as a 2011 title, but when I spoke with Aaron, he sounded less confident. When I asked about the percentage completed of the game, he told me that he didn’t think they would be able to make the 2011 date, but that at this point in the game’s development, all they needed was “content”. Judging by the build I played, and Aaron’s remarks, I’d be very surprised if the game did not come out by April 2012. Don’t hold me to that. It’s what they call an educated guess. Or in my case, a limited education guess.

Battleblock Theater has so far been announced for XBLA, with no official word on PSN release. And if you’re wondering about DLC, the answer is a resounding yes, though no word on if any will cross over from Alien Hominid or Castle Crashers.

Alan Wake Returning To Night Springs In New XBLA Title

Alan Wake is back! A source over at XBLAFans has confirmed that new Alan Wake material, a title called Night Springs, is in the works. Neither the sequel nor DLC, it will not be a retail release (meaning you won’t be able to collect REAL Xbox Night Springs game cases). However, you will be able to pick it up Xbox Live Arcade when it debuts. Keep an eye out, ‘cause this one will likely be announced officially at E3 2011.

The New Castle Crashers Knight Will Tickle You Pink

People want the pink. Which is something we’re all aware of, but in this case I was a little surprised. By popular demand, a new Knight is joining PSN’s Castle Crasher roster, in a tantalizing shade of candy pink. Along with the new hue, this addition brings a total of four new weapons, including a lollipop!

And while the new Knight’s February 8 release is conveniently timed right before Valentine’s Day, 100% of the $1.99 price will go towards breast cancer research. Behemoth also assures that there will be a version coming out for XBLA’s Castle Crashers in the coming weeks.

Dead Rising 2 Costumes DLC (Which Do More Than Play Dress Up)

Again, I only come out of my zombie killing paradise in order to talk about my zombie killing paradise. There’s just something about mass murdering brain dead, shambling monsters once classified as “human.” Wait, maybe I shouldn’t say that out loud.

Four costume packs are coming to XBLA for 60 MS points each ($1.99 in meat-space). These were available for free if you pre-ordered, but now will be released one by one on Tuesdays over the next four weeks. It’s not just playing dress up either; some of these bonuses are fierce.

The Psychopath pack, which releases tomorrow October 12, will make Chuck “harder to kill” (I expect something similar to a Painkiller) and will improve weapons like “chainsaws, cleavers, axes,” etc. I wonder if hockey mask comes included? And do you think that the knife gloves count? That’s Freddie Kruger territory, right?

The Soldier of Fortune pack will release next Tuesday, October 19. Any guns with ammo will be doubled (does the BFG and Super BFG count?!?!), you’ll have better accuracy (thank you Jeebus!) and you’ll get a special move that “sprays zombies with bullets.” Yes, please.

The Sports Pack will increase damage from — you guessed it—sports related weapons. But the “extras” on this one is sure to score a touchdown (see what I did there?): gambling will be more profitable, health items will work better, and for the alcoholic in us all, booze will no longer cause you to puke. This pack will release on October 26.

The final pack is the Ninja Pack, which gives you cool pajamas, and increases weapons like swords and “stackable” items  (I’m not sure what that means?). And since you’re a ninja, you’ll also be able to pass by zombies undetected better. And no, I didn’t just make that up. That’s for real real.

To be honest though, I’m not really going to care after tomorrow’s DLC. Fallout: New Vegas releases October 19, and the next week unveils Fable III. Sorry Chuck, but I have to go on to new games. Don’t worry; we’ll always have Fortune City.

Flashback: X-men Arcade “Soon” for XBLA & PSN

Marvel released the news at New York Comic Con that they will bring X-men (the arcade version) to PSN and XBLA.  The price was undetermined, and the dates were unannounced.  But they’re totally gonna do it.

Joystiq called Dazzler, so I’m calling Wolverine.  Back off, Jean Grey.

Case Zero Out On XLBA

*Cough Cough* Oh, I don’t feel well today.  I think…I think I need to go home early.  What’s that boss?  You know that Dead Rising 2 has their demo/teaser game came out today? And only for $5? I did not know that.  What are you pointing at, my calendar? Oh no, that’s a note to, uh, “call Lero.” Not “Case Zero,” though I could understand how you might see that if you were looking for it.

Sooooo….I mean, now that you’ve brought it up, and I’m just thinking out loud here—that I might be contaminated with the zombie virus.  I mean, how would I know, I’m not a doctor, but I think I should get this….what did you call it? DeeElleCee? I probably should rush home to research it.

What’s that?  You’re giving me extended time off?  Permanently?  Thanks boss, you’re so nice!

Scott Pilgrim Out on XLBA Yesterday, Contains Extra Content Codes

So yesterday marked the end of the long wait for XLBA to release their version of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.  And for $15, $5 more than the PSN version which was released 15 days earlier (I hope punching in my credit card number angrily on my keypad proved how mad I was at you, XBOX).

It’s an awesome game, with great throwbacks to games of old, including a “subspace highway” that includes “faulty code” on the screen, as if the game glitched out.  When you exit the game to return to the dashboard, it does this little blip thing—something I never would have thought of, but is totally reminiscent of NES games.  It makes me want to blow it (dear Bryan O’Malley…..)

The game even comes with “cheat” codes, entered at the start screen.  There’s zombie mode —- down, up, right, down, up, right, down, up, right, right, right then the punch button.  Boss Rush mode is unlocked using right, right, B, R1, right, right, B, R1.

Now I want to try the Konami code.  I think I’m feeling, cough cough, ill.  I think I need to, cough, go home from work early.  Cough, cough cough.  Yeaaaaaa.

Dead Rising 2 Fortune City Sending Out A City Map

The game may not be coming out til until September 28th, but the Fortune City map for Dead Rising 2 is already here.  Check it out for yourself! Zoom in on the directory to find the best stores and see a few familiar places; the Army Surplus store, High Noon Shooting Range, and Ned’s Knicknackery is back.  If I remember correctly, that’s where you got random exotic weapons, including the katana.

If you can’t wait to kick some zombie—butt? face?—whatever, XBLA will release the DLC Case Zero on August 31, which was the original release date for Dead Rising 2.  It will take place 2 years after the first game but 3 years before the second one. You’ll be able to reach level 5, and import your cash and PP (Dead Rising’s version of XP) into the second game. The DLC will only cost 400 Microsoft Points, or $5.

That was a brainy move on their part. I’d give my left arm for the DLC, or maybe a leg. Make sure the waiting doesn’t eat you up inside.

If you haven’t seen any videos or footage of this upcoming point and click (and maim) be sure to check out these two tourism videos for Fortune City, below.

This Plants Vs. Zombies Craft Will Really Grow On You

If you were secretly wanting to create your own army of plants to disperse tastefully throughout your garden (you know, to keep the zombies away) then have I got a piece of geekcraft for you! Check out this hand sewn Plant from Plants vs. Zombies, the creeper hit on iPhone from last year. Note: this listing is for the pattern, not the item, for $30.00. Yes, as in twice the price of the game and probably four times what you’ll pay for the materials. Go capitalism.

Speaking of Plants vs. Zombies, did you know there’s an XBLA version on the way? It’s bringing a slew of new content with it, including two new multiplayer modes, 12 achievements, and 21 mini games. Pick it from XBLA for 1200 Microsoft Points sometime this upcoming September.
