Desktop application makes it easier to manage Unity Editor versions and includes new quality of life features

Unity has dropped a new productivity tool in the laps of developers. The Unity Hub is a standalone desktop application that will take the headache out of version management for the editor. A post over at the Unity blog details the full featureset.

The tl;dr is that developers using multiple Unity Editor versions across multiple projects will have a much easier time managing these via a standalone application that allows you to set different default editor versions on a per project basis. Not only that, but you’ll also be able to download supporting documentation and example projects for each version of the editor that you have installed. Something that previously had been, Unity admits, “a pain”.

Alongside this, new Templates are being made available which will have optimised project settings for different game types and platforms. Currently the Unity Hub includes templates for the following: Standard 2D, Standard 3D, Lightweight games (mobile, low spec machines), High Definition (high visual quality, high spec devices) and Lightweight VR.

The full blog post includes more details, including a short roadmap for future Unity Hub updates, and an invitation for developers to suggest further improvements. You’ll also be able to download the beta version right now to try it out for yourself.
